The Customer - Allcare Pharmacies of Arkansas

By mid-2005, Fred Harris was facing a difficult decision. As executive vice president of Allcare Pharmacies of Arkansas, he had plenty of experience dealing with tough decisions. Fred started with Allcare when it was a small, independent retail pharmacy. Even in those early days, it was clear that the market would undergo dramatic changes and Allcare would have to change in order to meet those needs. More than 20 years ago, Allcare created a specialized pharmacy concept that is the basis of the long-term care pharmacy model that they use to this day.
Allcare is still an independent pharmacy provider. They operate retail pharmacies and provide pharmaceutical services to correctional facilities in the state of Arkansas. Their LTC pharmacy services 85 skilled nursing homes with a total of 5,000 beds and they average 35,000 prescriptions per month.  continue - (pdf)

The Customer - Mercury Pharmacy

Steve Boulanger, RPh, purchased Mercury Pharmacy in Mountlake Terrace, Washington, in 2001. When he started out he was providing pharmacy services to 300 beds in Boarding Homes - typically a small home that provides care to four to six residents. Boulanger recognized significant growth opportunities in the long-term care marketplace and structured Mercury's business to take advantage of those opportunities. Mercury sought to differentiate itself by providing the best customer service possible. Boulanger believes that this can be accomplished in two ways - through regularly scheduled training and consistent facility visits.
"We do extensive training at new homes to show them how the process works first-hand," says Boulanger. "It's important that they know the correct procedures right from the start." The up-front investment in training pays off in the long run for the pharmacy, as trained employees at the facility typically make fewer errors requiring pharmacy intervention. Mercury's commitment to training doesn't stop after new facilities are up and running - they continue their on-site training program for new employees at the facilities.  continue - (pdf)
