Reasons for Medication Non-Adherence

Most of the research about medication adherence has been completed among subjects who are taking prescriptions for their mental and / or emotional health. In the general population, the principal reasons for non-adherence seem to be:

Knowledge:

  • Patients / Consumers just don't' know what to do
  • Underestimate the consequences of non-adherence

Methods: - Patients / Consumers are unclear about the route or methods to take the medicine or adhere to the treatments

Attitudes:

  • Embarrassment / Pride
  • Desire to save money
  • Cultural beliefs

State of Health:

  • I feel good now, so why take the medicine?
  • I feel bad now, so I won't take the medicine?
  • Side effects, or fear of side effects
  • Memory impairment

Support: No one, or no system to prompt, remind and / or assist

Literacy:

  • Cannot read or properly interpret instructions
  • Doesn't understand which Rx for which condition / situation

Access:

  • Unable to access pharmacy for fill / refills
  • Cost

The packaging of medicines, such as RxMAP from MTS, contributes significantly to assuring treatment and medication adherence. Simple, easy to use packaging helps patients become, and stay, compliant with their prescriptions, especially complex long term, chronic illnesses requiring multiple medicines over time. When the sequence of medications and the intervals are clearly laid out, and the patient can visualize the pills to be taken, medication adherence and overall health are improved.
