Controls Engineer

Position Summary:

The Controls Engineer position is a key role that is responsible for designing Electrical and Pneumatic systems that control MTS’ packaging machinery.  Duties include: Electrical and Pneumatic system design, machine debug, machine setup and alignment, procedural documentation, and component failure analysis.

 

Functional Duties and Responsibilities:

Electrical and Pneumatic System Design:  A Controls Engineer is responsible for designing the Electrical and Pneumatic Systems for use in MTS punch card packaging machines.  The systems will be designed to meet customer and/or internal specifications and must also adhere to all applicable safety and design standards.

 

Machine Debug:  When a new machine is being commissioned, the Controls Engineer will perform the Controls Debug by powering on the system, programming all functional components such as PLC’s, motor amplifiers, temperature controllers, etc. and verify their proper operation. 

 

Machine Setup and Alignment:  Once all components are powered on, programmed, and operating correctly, the Controls-related components will be aligned and adjusted for proper machine operation.  This includes “teaching” servo motor positions, calibrating heat sealing components, adjusting flow controls, and setting sensors for proper detection.

 

Procedural Documentation:  Standard Operating Procedures will be created and maintained which outline procedures for: component setup, component programming, system alignment, and component troubleshooting.

 

Component Failure Analysis:  When Controls-related components fail on a machine, the Controls Engineer will assist in performing root-cause analysis on the failed component.  The analysis data will then be used to improve upon existing machine design as well as to prevent similar component failures on future machine designs.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

This position requires knowledge of Electrical and Pneumatic machine design, PLC programming, Servo motor commissioning and tuning, and basic mechanical concepts.  Required skills include Attention to Detail, troubleshooting and problem-solving, and detail-oriented written and oral communications.  The Controls Engineer must have the ability to work in and around electrical enclosures, servo motors and other high-frequency-producing equipment, perform mechanical adjustments to machine controls such as sensors, knobs, dials, pneumatic flow controls, etc.; and be able to use computers and other electronic equipment to program components and control machinery equipment.

Summary:

 

 

V.P. Packaging Automation

 

Plans and directs all aspects of the Mechanical Engineering activities and ensures that projects, initiatives and processes are in conformance with established policies, objectives and good design practices. Develops and oversees ideas for new products and/or product improvement. Leads and directs mechanical engineering team and is responsible for final product.

 

 

·         Plan and direct the work of the Design Engineering staff.

a.       Assign project requests to individual design staff.

b.      Provide adequate information to design staff for performing proper design work.

c.       Monitor and critique work regularly with design staff at the design stages.

d.      Enforce good design practices, design for manufacturing techniques.

e.       Enforce design checking and BOM accuracy procedures.

f.       Provide continuous improvement and skills training of staff.

 

·         Develop new products and equipment from the beginning concept through completion.

a.       Knowledge of project requirements and time frames.

b.      Analyze project requirements to determine action required.

c.       Meet with design staff to determine best design solution to meet the project’s demands.

d.      Follow through with design review process and monitor project status.

e.       Monitor assembly department progress of project.

f.       Awareness of new technologies.

 

·         Organize engineering staff to accomplish goals efficiently.

a.       Balance workloads uniformly.

b.      Conduct design staff meetings to discuss any issues and corrective actions.

c.       Insure that engineering tools (computers, programs) are working properly and up-to-date.

 

·         Authorize recruitment of additional personnel as required.

a.       Monitor workloads within the department

b.      Maintain project activity list and manpower/hours loading.

c.       Evaluate future project requirements and make provisions in budget for increase staffing.

 

·         Plan and maintain departmental budget.

a.       Evaluate if there is a need for new equipment and/or up-grades and supplies for all departments.

b.      Based on projected sales, monitor capacity planning to evaluate the need for additional staffing.

c.       Based on projected sales, evaluate labor capacity and salaries.

 

·         Report on the performance of the Engineering projects.

a.       Manage all design projects and provide oral or written status reports.

b.      Keep appropriate departments abreast of any developments or issues.

c.       Review and monitor projects in the build phase inspecting for design flaws.

d.      Monitor builders box redlines and ECN process frequently.

e.   Coordinate build phase project releases applying project management techniques.

Contract System Test Engineer

Role:

Position will start as Contract with possible conversion to full time employment at company discretion. The Software Test Engineer performs full system test functions for medication administration, labeling and packaging products.

 

Responsibilities:

The Software Test Engineer is responsible for:

1.    Reviewing product requirement and design documentation

2.      Performing full system test functions including:

  1.  
    1. Develop test plans and scripts
    2. Execute system tests
    3. Document and report defects

Technical Considerations:

The Software Test Engineer will have:

1.    Solid knowledge of the MS windows environment.

2.    Ability to do minor adjustments on assorted hardware devices.

3.    Experience testing applications that use Oracle databases.

4.    Ability to use SQL to query and setup database test cases (useful).

5.    Ability to perform computer setup.

6.    Experience installing software and associated database updates (useful).
